Public Intellectual 1. Take a look at yourself speaking. Watch it a couple of times. Then post a comment with your reaction. Be sure to point to something about the substance as well as the style of your speaking. Also, identify two things you'll try to work on for PI2.

Also, feel free to comment on other people's speaking. Use the "@" convention to identify who you're talking to. For example, "@David, where's your PI statement?"

  1. Substance: I had a point to make, but I didn't make it. There were critical pieces of what I thought I had said that didn't make it out of my mouth. This is a problem I already know that I have - I tend to think far faster than my mouth can move, and the effect is akin to skipping across a record. For PI2 I need to work on slowing down and connecting my thoughts to one another for form a complete and well supported argument, rather than skipping across the surface of my message and missing many critical points along the way.

Style: I have the Italian hand-gesture thing working overtime, and it's not working FOR me. For PI2 I need to figure out what to do with my hands when I'm trying to talk with my mouth. I also need to make eye contact with the camera. I look uncertain and uncomfortable. (which I may be, but I certainly don't have to look that way!) I think slowing down will help me here, as well.

  2. (David Wong) Hey class, be sure to include your name at the beginning of your post. It's not always obvious from your ID who you are!

  3. (Marla Saint Gilles) I tried to make a point about behaviorism and linguistics, and I sort of got the point out, but it was pretty messy. For PI2, I want to try to slow down and make sure all of the words come out correctly, so that I sound more professional. In terms of style, I really try to concentrate on my body posture and position, but not so much on my eye contact and focus. I'll need to work on that for round 2!

  5. (Tamika McLean) Not bad for my first try. I need to work on keeping my hand gestures to a minimum and work on my pronunciation of words for PI2. I don't think I said anything of substance about behaviorism, but I do try to apply what we are learning in class to what I have experienced inside the classroom. Also, its kinda hard to come up something original when someone in front of you has basically said the same thing you were just thinking. Nevertheless, for PI2 I think I need to come up with something more insightful.

  6. (Luke Rapa) In terms of style, watching the video made me realize how much I use “um”s and “ah”s to fill gaps when talking in front of people. I also realized that I sway too much—constant movement is probably not a good thing. In terms of substance, I was struck by the fact that my comments seemed fairly general, or at the surface level. While I was pleased with my assertion that behaviorism doesn’t account for the fact that cognitive processes can inform behavior, and that we need to study the effect of such processes on learning, I think my comments weren’t substantial enough. For next time, I need to cut the “ah”s, stop swaying, and say something that goes beyond a fairly surface-level response.

  7. (Rachel Kopke) In terms of substance, there wasn't much! I will work on incorporating more of my own thoughts and opinions for PI2. Standing straight and looking at the camera would also be helpful to improve my style.

  8. (Brooke Quisenberry) I had so many ideas running through my head, that when I attempted to say just a few of them, I glossed over the details that would've supported the claims I was making. Next time, I need to slow down and remember to support what I'm saying so that I can say something more substantive.

As far as style goes, I did pretty good with a limited number of ums, however, I know I need to still be aware of that in the future. I'm not Italian, but evidently I still use my hands a lot. Next time I need to be more conscious of what my hands are doing. Finally, I'd like to make better eye contact with the camera the next time.

  9. (Tara Kilbride) Style-wise, mine turned out a little better than I expected! I repeated myself a little bit and could have used a more authoritative tone, but overall I was okay with how this part went.

As far as substance goes, I think I said what I wanted to, but probably should have explained more in-depth. My response seemed a little redundant.

  10. Mari MacFarland: I felt pretty good about my first go at the "Public Intellectual". I was able to convey what I was thinking and I felt that I came across as "real" and confident, but I definitely would like to count down on my um's and uh's.

  11. I thought that I should have been more aware of my body language and eye contact during the video. I felt I needed to present myself as if I were talking to a person or a group of people. As far as content, I could have elaborated on the techniques I may have used during my functional behavior analysis, or what things that I am more interested into examining in behaviorism.
